High school kids rally to help
On Monday, November 9 these students at Wichita’s Southeast High School got out of class to attend a special celebration of their achievement — raising nearly $2,000 to ensure that chronically hungry children at neighboring Caldwell Elementary get food to eat during the weekend. The students of Steve Wentz, psychology teacher at Southeast, raised the money as part of their sponsorship of Caldwell through the Food Bank’s No More Hungry Kids campaign. By becoming Caldwell’s sponsor, the students agree to help cover the cost of providing Caldwell children with the Food4Kids backpack program, which provides kid-friendly, non-perishable foods to eat during weekends. The food goes to children who show physical and behaviorial signs that indicate they may not otherwise be eating on the weekends. Caldwell has 18 children on the Food4Kids program, at an annual cost of nearly $2,000 a year. Students at Southeast raised the money to cover that expense in about two weeks. On Monday they presented a check to Caldwell and the Food Bank at a special celebration where Principal Leroy Parks thanked the students by treating them to pizza.
