Pantries open nights, weekends
We know that at least 1 in 3 families that get food from the Kansas Food Bank have at least one member working full-time. We also know that working 40 hours a week at the current minimum wage is not enough to lift someone above poverty. This is why the working poor are a special concern to the Kansas Food Bank and our hunger-relief agencies. Most pantries are open during blocks of time that fall within traditional work hours — Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The good news, however, is that a number of pantries are choosing to open after hours. In Wichita, these include:
- Southeast Good Neighbor Center at Victory Baptist Church, 812 S. Oliver, open Monday evenings from 5-8 p.m.;
- Streetlight food pantry, 1658 S. Topeka, open Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m.;
- Simple House, 255 N. Waco, open to referrals on Thursday evenings from 7-8 p.m;
- South City Baptist, 1513 S. Galena, open the 3rd Thusday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m.;
- Wichita Dream Center, 2000 S. Hillside, open the 2nd Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to Noon; and
- Whole Truth Gospel Fellowship, 411 S. Martinson, open the 3rd Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
These special hours would not be possible without the valuable commitment of volunteers at these pantries. We thank them for this extra effort!
